Amazing...all I could think of was the book "Endurance" which is one of my all time favs about Shackleton and his ill fated efforts six yrs or so later...what an epic tale of, well, endurance! If any of you history buffs have missed this (there was an excellent docu flick on it recently too), you should defn put this on your list for reading. You'll never think of ass acne (butt boils) in the same way as you have while reading accounts of them as the most common affliction of the Empire's Finest in Victoria's far flung dominions of old. No wonder they found that spirits were an absolute necessity on such adventures.

You are so right - Endurance was quite an excellent book. One of my favorite (non fiction) reads also. Amazing determination under such severe conditions.

I confess to being partial to ginger ale and ice myself. Of course, if the whiskey is over say twelve years old and cost a lot, I’d drink it neat.
